Dish Restores Turner TV Channels Including CNN Restoration Part of Short-Term Accord Between the Battling Media Companies By JOE FLINT Nov. 21, 2014 1:03 p.m. ET
The cable news channel CNN and other networks owned by Time Warner Inc. ’s Turner Broadcasting have been restored on Dish Network Corp. ’s satellite TV service as part of a short-term accord between the battling media companies.
Dish dropped CNN and other channels including Cartoon Network last month when it couldn't come to terms with Turner on a new distribution agreement. Losing access to Dish’s roughly 14 million subscribers has been a big blow to Turner. Ratings for CNN, which are already low, plunged further without the satellite broadcaster’s reach.
The temporary agreement came on the verge of another standoff between Turner and Dish. The distribution agreement for Turner’s popular channels TNT and TBS was set to expire on Dec. 5. Both those channels have hit shows and TNT also carries a heavy load of NBA basketball games as well as a large chunk of the NCAA men’s college basketball tournament.
Dish and Turner declined to disclose details of the agreement. However, a person familiar with the deal said the extension for all the Turner networks runs to early spring. Going forward, all the Turner networks will be under the same contract as well, the person said.
Dish is also in the midst of a tense negotiation with CBS Corp. The contract between the companies expired on Thursday but the two sides agreed to an extension of a few days. Dish is also fighting with Comcast Corp. over a distribution deal for its regional sports networks.
